And then she started gaining weight and attempting to justify it with the whole “I’m confident in my body…Real women have curves” thing, and my eye roll wouldn’t stop. We could speculate a million times over where the weight gain really came from. A mommy having trouble losing the baby weight, frustration sets in, she gives up. Fallen singer not able to make the hits that once came so easy, depression sets in, she stops caring about her body…she’s rich anyway, she can do whatever she wants. All the fake-bake toxins have built up in her body and the results are a dirty-orange bloated mess. OR drugs and alcohol become more important than appearances. Vodka bellies are much more comforting than eating disorders….just ask Lindsay Lohan.

At any rate, these are just my bitchy accusations. Christina Aguilera has decided to address her weight gain. She opened up to Billboard magazine because clearly she has a new album to promote. Come on guys,  can’t do it all:

“I am Ecuadorian, but people felt so safe passing me off as a skinny, blue-eyed white girl,” Aguilera said.

But during the promotion of her album “Stripped” in 2002, Aguilera admits she “got tired of being a skinny, white girl.”

“[They claimed] people I toured with would also miss out if I gained weight, because I would sell no records or tickets for my shows. I was young, so I lost the weight quickly and was toothpick thin during ‘Back to Basics’ promos and touring.”

But now, Aguilera is fighting back. She says that when she met with her label before she started recording her upcoming album, “Lotus,” she told them:

“’You are working with a fat girl. Know it now and get over it.’ They need a reminder sometimes that I don’t belong to them. It’s my body,” Aguilera told Billboard. “My body can’t put anyone in jeopardy of not making money anymore — my body is just not on the table that way anymore.”

Just last week, Aguilera released the video for her song “Your Body,” which will be on her upcoming album. Her love of her new curves is evident in the video, as she has no problem flaunting her assets. The opening scenes show her rolling around on a bed in lingerie, and the video ends with her wearing a black skintight cut-out dress.

“I’ve been criticized for being on both sides of the scale. It’s noise I block out automatically. I love my body. My boyfriend loooves my body. My son [4-year-old Max] is healthy and happy, so that’s all that matters to me,” she said in an interview with Marie Claire magazine earlier this year.

Here’s the thing, I am all for embracing your figure; but I cannot rally behind celebrities who “embrace fuller figures” only after their own figures come under fire. I said the same thing about Lady Gaga in a previous post…only I feel like her reasonings were completely different from Christina and a whole new level of selfish. Yay for Real women have curves…Boo for I have curves now and people are being mean to me…so I’m your sista! *fists in the air*.

Let me clarify.

Lady Gaga is a gimmick. A caricature. She is art. I’ve said this before and I will say it many times after this. She is the second coming of Madonna…doing things for shock value and fan favor. This is exactly like the support of “her gays.” Do I think that Lady Gaga honestly embraces gay fans? Sure, they’re no different than any other person that loves her. Do I believe that she is as passionate as she says? No. (Plain and simple)

The “singling out” of her gay fans was a lead-in to her Born This Way album. It was what sold the album. The idea behind the song… you are who you are…you were born this way… it made you want to support her. She understood. She was different too. She was bullied too. She is a monster too. She accepted herself…why shouldn’t I?

Don’t get me wrong, Gaga is talented; but she abandoned the idea of being successful based on talent alone a long time ago. She needs something to stand for. Something to peddle in the place of her album so that she looks philanthropic. A platform…kind of like a beauty queen.

So this weight gain…I think of it as a lead in to her next album. Something to put her back into the spotlight and make us rally behind her when the mean press, paparazzi, and record labels try to change her into something she is not…at least not anymore.

I get the invasion of privacy…but heck…welcome to reality. There is no such thing as privacy in the world of Twitter and Facebook and accessibility. You have LeAnn Rimes going to rehab because she can’t deal with the crap that people dish out on social networking sites. I’m not saying that it’s right, but the moment they got married…on national television…they invited the world into their lives. They asked us to embrace them. It’s not proper to assume that you will only be embraced when you want to be. Maybe suing the French tabloid that published the picture will put a little fear into the media…but that’s doubtful.

I also get that this is coming straight after the Prince Harry Royal Butt-crack scandal…but tell me the last time you saw a butt-crack and felt any way other than offended. It’s not a big deal! But what do I know? I’m just a silly American.

At any rate, Elle has lost 30 pounds since entering the music scene. I will say that it is debatable whether or not she would be as successful as she is now had she not lost the weight. She’s not at Beyonce or Rihanna’s level yet…but then again how many artists are?…but she has still managed to capture attention and a fanbase with her fun, funky style, amazing voice, and catchy songs. She has sat down for many interviews where she discusses her journey. Excerpt:

R&B funktress Elle Varner shed the skinny on her weight loss, revealing in a new interview with BET on how she eliminated the excess and zeroed in on a tight and tone bod before becoming a hit-maker.

“When I went to college I definitely gained the freshman 15 and then some. I was heavy growing up, especially in middle school and high school, and I had lost some weight and gained it back,” Varner said. She made it a goal to incorporate vegetables and a variety of greens into her diet, ditching the meat and beginning a workout routine.

Her native New York not only presented an opportunity to work out in nature’s gym but also rediscover her city.

“You can run down the West Side Highway or the Brooklyn Bridge and not just be sitting on a treadmill because I hate the gym. I hate being on the treadmill, but I do love running and seeing the sights and that’s kind of how I discovered New York as well,” she said.

Health reasons also encouraged the “Refill” singer to embrace a healthier lifestyle. Her family’s medical history included diabetes and heart disease and Varner wanted to prevent following the same path. But after writing her self-esteem anthem “So Fly,” the big-haired songbird is now 30 pounds lighter and enjoys rocking fashion trends she could peep her figure in. Most importantly, she is able to exercise in a way she never expected.

“I never imagined I could do a push up or run a mile,” Varner said. “The healthier I was, I felt like a better me and it became a lifestyle choice and not a thing of vanity.”

No matter what size the NYU grad fits into, Varner says she won’t let crunching numbers weigh her down.

“It’s sad no matter how we look or what size we are, we always want to change one more thing. I stopped fixating on things,” she said.”I try not to let those things exist to me. The more confident you are about yourself, the better decisions you make. You begin to just make choices that make you feel good.”

I love that she lost the weight for health reasons. All weight loss will, at some point, revolve around vanity…it is inevitable. People like to look good. It’s human nature. It’s when health and disease risks are thrown into the equation that people really begin to realize the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. It’s easy to disregard obvious family health histories as long as you are not directly affected by them. We live in a time where people are so fixated in living in the moment (YOLO…that’s the motto right?) that they don’t think about the future and that the way the body responds in youth doesn’t determine what will happen when you are 50.
